During Earth Month/April 2011, Mo'MAGIC youth in San Francisco, CA learned about ways to incorporate nature and sustainability in various art forms.
Up-Cycle Your Jewlery
The Experience
In this workshop, learn basic jewelry techniques, tool handling, stringing, wirewrapping, forging, and composition. Students are encouraged to bring old jewelry, found objects, or thrift-store finds to up-cycle into a new ring, necklace or pendant. We will start with the basics, work with wire to form a simple ring and then evolve into personal creations.
About the Instructor
EcoArtists,Josie Adele, has been an entrepreneur jewelry designer since 2004 and uses recycled elements and local production in her work. She has a degree from Colorado State University and completed the Sustainable Design Program at the University of California Berkeley Extension. She develops eco-efficient products from recycled metals and other materials and views it as a beautiful and rewarding challenge to up-cycle waste into something of value, which will be appreciated for years to come. Okeanos, the Dance of the Ocean
The Experience
Covering 99% of Earthʼs living space, the ocean represents the rhythms of life. The ocean is an integral part of our lives in providing us food, the oxygen we breathe, water we drink, and inspiration for countless songs, poems, paintings and dances. Explore the arts, science and movement of the ocean in this exploratory dance workshop. No previous dance experience required.
About the Instructor
EcoArtist, Jodi Lomask is the Artistic Director and Founder of Capacitor, a San Francisco-based interdisciplinary dance company. Capacitor artists collaborate with members of the scientific community to create mind-expanding, heart-gripping live performance. Their latest work, Okeanos, is a collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences and was premiered at TED2009 in Long Beach, California. Native Hip Hop Audio Production
The Experience
Music and nature is one and the same. Explore the significance of traditional instruments of Native American cultures and their connection to the natural world. Then, enjoy a hip hop workshop in audio production. Participants will learn how to sample, edit audio and add electronic instrumentation to a collective song.
About the Instructor
EcoArtists, Ras K'dee is a musician, producer and lead vocalist of Audiopharmacy. He also works extensively in the community and with youth. Previously, he worked in the youth services department at the Native American Health Center in Oakland. In 2002, he co-founded SNAG and continues to direct this organization that provides a holistic approach that combines spirituality, tradition and multi-media skills to shape the next generation of Native leaders. Silkscreening T-Shirts for Earth Day
The Experience
Silk-screening is a way to express one’s own words and vision onto a piece of wearable art. During this workshop, we will choose earth-themed designs, silkscreen them onto fabric, and learn how to create and print our own clothing. Participants are encouraged to bring blank t-shirts and bags to reconstruct into take-home art.
About the Instructor
EcoArtists, Maria Allocco is a writer and youth educator of over 10 years. Her voice can be heard throughout Bay Area events, whether in Litquake or at The Intersection for the Arts. She was the recipient of the Academy of American Poets Prize in 2003,and her work can be seen in The Lantern Review, The Monday Night Literary Review, and Fusion Literary Magazine. She is inspired by nature and the expression of youth, and feels that writing and art are essential forms of expansion.
